RESEARCH NEEDS: The species remains unassessed in the IUCN Red List, therefore foremost it is important to assess potential threats that could negatively affect regional populations, capacity-building measures need to be developed, e.g. training seminars for customs officials on species identification to avoid export of look-a-like species, e.g., members of the Varanus indicus complex; conduct population ecological studies that provide data on abundance, density levels, home range size, etc., genetically document regional populations to cross-check with provenance of specimens involved in the international trade; assess potential impact of domestic use in regional populations
