TAXONOMY: The species is considered a member of the Varanus gouldii species complex; currently three populations are recognized; Varanus panoptes horni,  V. p. panoptes and V. panoptes rubidus; however taxonomic status among these taxa is unresolved

DISTRIBUTION: Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia (for detailed distribution data, see Auliya & Koch 2020)

RED LIST STATUS: Least Concern (LC) in 2017
