TAXONOMY:  Currently three subspecies are recognized, two native to Australia, i.e. V. g. gouldii, and V. gouldii flavirufus, plus one native to southern New Guinea, i.e. Varanus gouldii horni; V. gouldii is considered a species complex and likely bears new species
